Claire: Top five grooming tips with Karen Pugh
Karen:
#1 Brush and comb your dog at home on a regular basis.
#2 Handle your dog daily including touching feet, claws, ears and tail. This is really important to help desensitise them.
#3 Socialisation! Get your puppy or dog socialised with your groomer as early as possible.
#4 When bathing your dog at home, please choose a natural product, avoid harsh chemicals and always double rinse. It is really important to double rinse to make sure all the shampoo has been removed.
#5 If your dog has become matted, these need to be removed before bathing – bathing will tighten any mats making them harder to remove. Seek out professional grooming help – they can advise you on the best way to get these mats removed.
Another tip would be NEVER use scissors to cut knots or mats! Please go to the groomers and have them use clippers to remove them. It is very important as a dog can be cut very easily and cause a lot of pain.
Claire: So there you go there are your top five tips, courtesy of Karen Pugh from Heatherdown Dog Grooming salon in Bournemouth. Don’t forget to check out our full length interview with Karen, on how you can best care for your dog and it’s coat.
