CLAIRE: Hello and welcome along to the Wagnificent Pets Top Ten Tips. Today I’m joined by Lisa Tonks who is the owner of Paws 4 Reward in Ringwood in the New Forest. Lisa is a APDT Dog Trainer, she is also a Tellington TTouch Practitioner. I caught up with Lisa to ask what were her top ten tips you would give every dog owner?
LISA: OK, my top ten tips are;
#1. Choose a dog that suits your lifestyle. That is, the size of the dog, the amount of exercise it requires and the kind of breed you are looking for.
#2. Be prepared. There’s no instructions. You are going to have to do your research.
#3. Diet. It’s huge. Check out what you are feeding your dog. What your dogs parents have been fed on. It will all have an influence on your puppy.
#4. Training and interaction through play. Not just to teach the dog, but forever. The dog would like to keep learning.
#5. Exercise and games. Don’t just take your dog for a walk. Go for a walk with your dog and enjoy it. Play with your dog on these walks. That’s when you are going to have good recall and a good bond with your dog.
#6. Spend time with your dog. It’s not a toy. You can’t put it away. It wants to please you. It wants to be with you. You’ll enjoy it more if you keep playing.
#7. Do your research. Vaccinations, preventatives, local vets, training classes. There’s so much out there, don’t just do what the first person tells you to do.
#8. Enjoy your dog! The more you enjoy your dog the more your dog will enjoy you.
#9. Consistency. Consistency is one of the top things that people get wrong. If you’re not consistent, the dog wont learn.
#10. You are not an owner, you are your dog’s guardian. Look after them.
CLAIRE: What a lovely way to end Lisa’s Top Ten Tips – be an awesome guardian!
